From Polar Ice Cores to Better Climate Models ?

چکیده

Thomas Stocker, Professor of Climate and Environmental Physics and Co-Director of the Physics Institute at the University of Bern in Switzerland, spent his 2006 sabbatical at the IPRC. He worked with IPRC research team leader Axel Timmermann and postdoctoral fellow Oliver Timm on modeling the abrupt climate changes in the past that have resulted from changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Understanding processes that have shaped past climates is central to determining what lies ahead for climate change. We asked Professor Stocker to write for the IPRC Climate about this work and how it advances our knowledge of Earth’s climate system.

Past temperature reconstructions from deep ice cores: relevance for future climate change

Ice cores provide unique archives of past climate and environmental changes based only on physical processes. Quantitative temperature reconstructions are essential for the comparison between ice core records and climate models. We give an overview of the methods that have been developed to reconstruct past local temperatures from deep ice cores and highlight several points that are relevant fo...

Ice Cores , High - Mountain Glaciers , and Climate

The near-global retreat of high-mountain glaciers and the shrinkage of ice fields and ice caps and retreat of their associated outlet glaciers are perhaps the most visible evidence for 20th-century climate change and the recent increase in the globally averaged near-surface temperatures of the Earth’s surface. The loss of high-mountain glaciers—including ice fields, ice caps, and other glaciers...

Noble Gases in Ice Cores: Indicators of the Earth’s Climate History

Polar ice cores constitute excellent archives of past environmental conditions and provide us with glimpses into the Earth’s climatic history over hundreds of thousands of years. For the past two decades, noble gases, used as conservative tracers, have played a substantial role in extracting information from these archives. Noble gas analysis can be performed on two types of ice core samples. F...

Evidence for Changes in Climate and Environment in 1816 as Recorded in Ice Cores from the Quelccaya Ice Cap , Peru , the Dunde Ice Cap , China and Siple Station , Antarctica

The climate and environmental records preserved in three ice cores from three quite different sites (the tropical Quelccaya Ice Cap , Peru , the subtropical Dunde Ice Cap , China, and the Antarctic Ice Sheet, Siple Station) are examined for the period 1808-21. Emphasis is placed upon identifying potential changes in climate following the eruption of Tambora in 1815. Ice cores provide a multifac...
